How Improve your English with social media

When you’re learning English in London, you’ll find endless opportunities to practise your language skills and learn new vocabulary. However, what many students don’t realise is that they also have a fantastic resource to help them improve their English, which is right at their fingertips.
Not sure what we mean? Do you have a smartphone? Do you use apps like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and Instagram? If so, you can use social media tools to practise and perfect your English skills, using the power of the web to connect yourself to a huge community of English speakers.

Social media vocabulary

Before you start, here are some social media vocabulary essentials you’ll need to know. You may recognise these words, but they have slightly different meanings in the social media world:

Post: a post is simply anything that you put on social media. It could be a status update, a picture or a joke.

Feed: this is the place where you’ll see new information on your social media app in real time. This will often be made up of posts from your contacts and the people you follow.

Hashtag: You’ll see these with the familiar # symbol in front. Hashtags are used to put words or phrases into categories, so people can find them by searching.

Like: some social media apps allow you to click a button to show that you like a post. A post with a lot of likes will often be worth reading or looking at.

Share: all social media apps allow you to share posts made by other people. Sharing someone else’s post will mean the people who see you in their own feeds will also see the posts you share. This is normally done at the click of a button.

Trending: if something is said to be “trending” this means a lot of people are currently talking about it on social media.

Ways to use social media to improve your English

There are many different ways you can use social media to improve your English skills. These could include the following:

find and follow other users on Twitter who give daily tips and hints about English language and grammar. For example, @dictionarycom is a good one to follow on Twitter.
use Instagram to share photos of the things you’ve seen and places you’ve visited, making sure you describe your adventures in words too
use Facebook to join groups that have been set up specifically for learning English. You and your classmates might wish to start a group of your own. Otherwise groups set up by reputable organisations are a good place to start, such as the BBC Learning English Facebook page.
